Report on the results of market inspection
We have conducted market inspection by picking up 20 (twenty)
DVD Video Disc at random from the Japanese market. For your convenience,
the following are the results of it. We would be much obliged
if you, DVD related companies which are getting involved in the
manufacture of disc would check our report and also, try to improve
quality of products.
(Results)
5 (five) discs out of 20 (twenty) do not comply with physical
format.
9 (nine) discs out of 20 (twenty) do not conform to logical format.
(Description)

In order to detect logical format problems, DVD -Video Verifier
(DVD-NF01VE Version 0.9.3) is made available for you by Osaka
(Matsushita) Laboratory with charged. We recommend you to use
DVD -Video Verifier for detecting logical format problems.
2.
Report on the results of market inspection on 6 (six) units of
commercially available PC with built-in DVD Video in Japan.
DVD format verification has been conducted on 6 units of commercially
available PC with built-in DVD Video in Japan
The following are the results of verification.
(Results)
Problems on 5 (five) units of PC out of 6 (six) have been detected
by conducting format verification using Navigation Files Test
Disc.
Playback problems have been detected after conducting compatibility
test between twenty pieces of commercially available DVD Video
Disc and 6 units of PC. As a results, 44 (forty four) problems
have been detected out of 120 (a hundred twenty) combinations.
(Measures)
DVD Verification Laboratory will further investigate this matter,
we would appreciate it if you, PC manufacturers would kindly conduct
DVD format verification voluntarily for stable market quality
of DVD Video.
For your convenience, please contact the following verification
laboratories for obtaining test discs for format verification
on DVD -ROM Drive which plays DVD Video Disc.

Report on the results of market inspection on physical parameter
(tilt)
Market claim on playback problems which are caused by tilt arouse
in the certain market. Thererore, DVD Verification Laboratory
has conducted investigagtion on 50 DVD Video Disc which are commercially
available in the market. For your reference, the following are
the results of investigation.
(Results)
- 5(five) discs out of 50(fifty) are out of Radial-Tilt specification.
- Quality contorl on disc adhesion of disc which is commercially
available in the certain market is insufficient.
(Measures)
We would appreciate it if you, replicater, would kindly strive
for improving accuracy of disc adhesion and also, prevent deterioration
due to aging by thermal treatment in such a way that the quality
in the market is improved.

Information on DVD Video Disc problems
(1)
Disc with parental management
Phenomena
of playback problems
Parental management does not function even though initial
setting is made in the player according to instructions in/on
the package.
Requirements
for production of disc
In
case that parental management is used for disc based on MPAA
specifications in the U.S., please be sure to describe instructions
of disc package in such a way that they are the same as actual
rating level that is set in the disc.
(2)
Disc problems relating to CSS
Discription
of disc problems
For non CSS scrambled disc, CSS flag is set and also, title
key exists.
Phenomena
of playback problems
Unable
to play back since player uses the title key which exists
in a disc.
Requirements
for production of disc
Be
sure to set CP _ SEC (0) and also, be sure not to set unnecessary
title key in a disc in case that CSS scramble is not provided
for the disc.
(3)
Disc problems relating to Layer Type
Discription
of disc problems
DVD Video Disc for the exclusive use of playback whose Lead-in
Area/ Control data/ Physical format information/Disc structure/Layer
type is set to "0000 b".
Phenomena
of playback problems
So far, no playback problems are detected.
Requirements
for production of disc
In the event that player or drive refers to Layer type described
above, the value is 0, it should be considered as failure
since it indicates that any data of ROM, R, or RAM is not
available.
When the value is 0 after a player refers to Layer type, then
refer to data such as Lead-in Area / Control data / Physical
format information / Book type and Part version / Book type.
5.
Information on DVD Player Playback problems
The objective here is to describe DVD player playback problems,
and also to make the most use of them for verification of player
to determine whether it is compliant with DVD Format in case that
it is developed in the future time. We would appreciate it if
a person who gets involved in authoring and contents provider
would kindly avail to those information described in this newsletter.

Since GPRM dose not increase correctly, navigation command
which uses GPRM value is not executed appropriately.

GPRM is not used as counter mode.

One ILVU consists of one VOBU in Interleaved Block.
Phenomena
of playback problems
Playback may freeze since Interleaved Block is not played
properly.
Countermeasures
to be taken with disc
Constitute ILVU in such a way that greater than two VOBUs
are set.

of playback problem of Disc
One PGC consists of 255 Cell.
Phenomena
of playback problems
Freeze will occur at the end of playback or hung-up will occur
at playback start.
Countermeasures
to be taken with disc
Let one PGC constitute less than 254 Cell.
Similar playback problems which have more strict restrictions
than this one have been described as (ID No. 104021) in DVD
Format Verification News File #004. Playback problems (ID
No. 108057) can be prevented by using countermeasures taken
by discs (ID No. 104021).

Description
of playback problem of Disc
The first PGCI through end C_PBI is greater than 2048 byte.
(eg. The number of Cell is large.)
Phenomena
of playback problems
Cell that can not obtain C_PBI will be unable to operate since
it is not played back.
Countermeasures
to be taken with disc
Total capacity of information from the first PGCI through
end C_PBI shall be less than 2048 byte
When the total volume is greater than 2048 byte, separate
such PGC. As for the number of Cells that can be set, refer
to the supplemental description. (File # 004)

Description
of playback problem of Disc
HLI is placed from the first VOBU just after a seamless connection
point.
Phenomena
of playback problems
Under the circumstance that the VOB containing the MENU also
contains moving video which connects seamlessly with the video
in the preceding VOB, the HLI always returns to the Button
Position which the MENU specifies to highlight first regardless
user moves cursor to any other button positions, so that the
other buttons are not selectable.
Countermeasures
to be taken with disc
Please
place the HLI from the second VOBU after the seamless connection
point.
