It is pleased to inform you that DVD Video Disc title has reached 286 titles, including the one that will be announcing shortly, in the Japanese market and 191 titles in the US. market. Such DVD disc titles show that a full-scale expansion for a year-end sale has been progressing.

On releasing "DVD Format Verification News" File No. 004, we have been describing on Disc and Player problems, so far, we would be much obliged if you, who have been getting involved with the development of Players and Disc, would kindly make use of it so that you can avoid quality problems on DVD Format at the time of a full-scale start -up of the market.

1. Information on DVD Video Disc problems

We have conducted sampling on 15 titles of DVD Video Disc that have been released in the Japanese market. 14 titles out of 15 titles have been found problems, and 356 bit allocation errors have been found.

The objective here is showing you the test results by describing major problem items and calls the attention of you to the analysis on the problems and countermeasures to be taken at authoring studio.

No playback problems with commercially available DVD Video Players.

(1) Test results : Refer to the table described below.


(2) Description of major playback problems

A. Presentation : Errors on Buffer control AV synchronized signal

(a) V 1259

Cause

PTS Exists in A _ PKT which has no first data of audio frame.

Description

PTS is input in a backet although no first data of audio frame exists. It is assumed that process for PTS, DTS has errors.

Effect

Playback problems (freezed picture of video/ skip, audio mute etc .) might be dependent on players due to AV synchronized signal disorder.

Specifications

(b) V 6002

Cause

Buffer Management is wrong.

Description

Stream that can not provide playback with MPEG decoder model (P_STD). It is assumed that something is wrong with buffer control algorithm of encoder.

Effect

Playback problems might be dependent on players due to under / over flow of decoder buffer .

Specifications

p. V13-89 and ISO / IEC 13818-2

(c) V 6005

Cause

Transfer rate is greater than MAX _ Vo.

Description

Transfer rate for decoder is greater than 10.08Mbps.

Time interval for error SCR (first Pack) is required.

Countermeasures might be taken by setting transfer rate smaller than 10.08Mbps in case that it can be set in encoder.

Effect

Playback problems might be dependent on players due to under flow of decoder buffer.

(d) V 2001

Cause

Relation of PTS and DTS is wrong.

Description

Relation of PTS, DTS is wrong. It is assumed that process for PTS, DTS of encoder has errors.

Effect

Playback problems might be dependent on players due to decode / display timing disorder with video decoder.

B. UDF (File)

(a) U610/710/810/910

Cause

"Volume Descriptor Sequence Number" of each descriptor in Volume Descriptor Sequence of UDF has errors.

Description

"Volume Descriptor sequence Number " that is described above shall be identical.

Setting described above that is not identical is an error.

Effect

Errors described above do not affect on DVD-ROM driver that employs ISO 9660. As a matter of fact, errors described above do not affect on DVD-Video Player that employs UDF.

(b) U9661

Cause

File ID of ISO 9660 has problems.

Description

File ID of ISO 9660 is "VIDEO TS.BUP;1" in case of "VIDEO _ TS.BUP" file.

However," ;1" is missing from file ID and sometimes only "VIDEO _ TS. BUP" is left as file ID of ISO 9660.

";" of file ID is called separator 2, and "1" of file ID is called version.

Those ones are essential for file ID of ISO 9660.

No problems if it is positive integral number that is smaller than 32767.

Specifications

ISO 9660 7.5

Effect

Those errors described above do not affect on DVD Video Player that employs UDF. It is dependent on driver that does not interpret file name properly in case that DVD-ROM Drive employing ISO 9660.

C. Navigation

(a) N 1417

Cause

Jump for PGC, that does not exist, has been specified.

Effect

No guarantee for player operation. In many cases, it is treated as No command or operation will be terminated.

(b) N 1307

Cause

It shall be 1b, but is it 0b?

Description

V _ BWD _ Exist 2 in FWD It shall indicate whether video data exists between the VOBU to be presented just before the predecessor and the first VOBU in the Cell, when BWDAn is 3fffffffh.

Specifications

V _ BWD _ Exist 2 in BWDIn.

Effect

Operation with players might be changed in case of jump-in or special playback with special program such as still picture program.

D. NV Pack

(a) N 1207

Cause

Any of field (described by a number after #)of VOBU _ 1st REF _ EA, VOBU _ 2ND _ REF _ EA, VOBU _ 3RD _REF _ EA has errors.

End data that includes applicable picture to be referred to is not included in a packet described in this field.

Effect

Parts of the picture displayed in the screen might be deformed or the picture might not be displayed in case of special playback such as forward scan or backward scan.

(b) N 1029

Cause

VOBU _ SE _ E _ PTM field, that indicates still picture existence, has errors.

Description

In case that sequence _ end _ code exists, the field does not have value which we expect.

Effect

Normally, those errors described above do not affect seriously on players. It is dependent on player that still picture might disappear soon after it is displayed in the screen.

VOBU _SE _ E_PTM in 4.4.1 PCI _ GI

E. Sub Picture

(a) SP 265

Cause

STA _ DSP is described in SPU while HL is valid.

Description

STA _ DSP can not be described in SPU that is valid for HL.

Effect

It is dependent on players whether display obeys SPU command or HLT command.

(b) SP 93

Cause

SPU display crosses over Cell.

Description

Sub-picture is not be displayed with crossing over Cell.

Effect

It is dependent on players that SPU might be continuously displayed with cell crossing over Cell.

5.1 Contents of VOB; Table 5.1-1 Restriction on each element.

"DVD Video Verifier DVD-NF010VE Version 0.9.2" is provided with charge by Osaka (Matsushita) laboratory as Verification Tools to detect bit allocation errors that have been described in this newsletter. For further information in this matter, please contact Osaka laboratory.

2. Information on DVD Video Player playback problems

The objective here is showing DVD Video Player playback problems and make the most use of them for verification of player to determine as to whether it is DVD Format compliant one in case that it is developed in the future time.

The following are countermeasures that can be taken by discs. We would appreciate it if the person who gets involved in authoring and contents provider would kindly avail to those information described below. For further information, please contact each Format Verification Laboratory.

(1) ID No. : 104016

Description of playback problem of Disc

VGM /VTS Menu exists with multi menu language. Among those, language menu of which LMGM/VTSM _ LU_SA is not a multiple of eight. And VMGM/ VTSM _ PGCI _SPTR is recorded with crossing over sector.

Phenomena of playback problems

It unable to operate if you operate Menu Key during title playback.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

VMGM/VTSM _ LU_SA is to be a multiple of eight in case that you make VMGM/VTSM of multi Menu language.

Problems can be avoided by making VMGM/VTSM_LU a multiple of eight after adding PGCI that is not be executed.

(2) ID No. : 104017

Description of playback problem of Disc

Disc that can be transferred from angle number n title to angle number m title with navi command. And the disc meet the following formula. n > m

Phenomena of playback problems

Multi angle cell can not be played back. If you try to play back the Cell, hang-up might occur.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Angle number SPRAM (3) is to be set less than m in case of menu call from angle number n title to angle number m, or the transfer is to be made with navi command.

(3) ID No. : 104018

Description of playback problem of Disc

Disc that exists huge number of title and PTT number in VTS.

Phenomena of playback problems

Title with greater number in VTS can not be played back. And if you try to play back those titles with greater number, hang-up might occur.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Total of title number and PTT number in the same VTS shall be less than 510.

(4) ID No. : 104019

Description of playback problem of Disc

Disc that pre-command has been described in dummy PGC that PTT is set.

Phenomena of playback problems

Stream that can not be played back since pre-command is not be executed.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Command can be described in post-command in case of dummy PGC of first PTT.

(5) ID No. : 104021

Description of playback problem of Disc

In case that from first PGCI to end C _ PBI is greater than 2048bytes.
( The number of Cell is large.)

Phenomena of playback problems

Cell that cannot obtain C _ PBI will be unable to operate since it is not be played back.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Total capacity of information from first PGCI to end C _ PBI shall be less than 2048 bytes. In case that total volume is greater than 2048 byte PGC is to be separated. As for the number of Cells that can be set, refer to the supplemental description.

Supplemental Description

The following are PGCI structure.

Less than 2048 byte PGC_GI   236 bytes
PGC_CMDT 8+8x CMD_Ns 1032 bytes max
PGC_PGGMAP 1 x PG_Ns 99 bytes max
C_PBI 24 x C_Ns 6120 bytes max
  C_POSI 24 x C_Ns 1024 bytes max

From first PGCI(PGC _ GI) to end C _ PBI shall be less than 2048 bytes.

In case that you do not have any commands, namely, PG _ Ns=1, maximum number of Cell is 75. [2048 - (236+1+0)] / 24 =75.4

The greater number of PG _ Ns you have, the less Cell you will have for registration.

(6) ID No.: 104022

Description of playback problem of Disc

Disc that the same multi C _ IDN Cell exist in one PGC.

Phenomena of playback problems

It might be unable to operate.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Do not have the same multi C _ IDN exist in one PGC.

Supplemental Description

In case that the same multi C _ IDN Cell exist , Cell that is actually played back is considered as CN=1, it is indicated CN=3 though. As a results, it might be unable to operate. These are phenomena when the same multi C _ IDN exsist in one PGC.

(7) ID No. : 104023

Description of playback problem of Disc

Cell number exists greater than 16 with LinkCN command.

Phenomena of playback problems

The wrong Cell is played back or it might be unable to operate in case that greater than 16 Cell numbers have been specified.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Maximum value of Cell number of LinkCN shall be 15.

LinkPG shall be used instead of LinkCN command when the Cell Number is greater than 15.

(8) ID No. : 104024

Description of playback problem of Disc

In case that sub-picture is set to OFF and it is set to SPRAM (2)= 0 - 31.

Phenomena of playback problems

Sub-picture, that is commanded that forced display is to be made, is not displayed.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Turn off the sub-picture with command and set to SPRAM (2 )=63 in case of forced display.

(9) ID No. : 104025

Description of playback problem of Disc

Disc whose physical sector address of VOB is greater than those value described below.

Single Layer : 260,000h
Dual Layer : 230,000h

Phenomena of playback problems

The address that has value greater than those described above can not be played back or you will have phenomenon that time indication dose not proceed.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

Maximum physical address of VOB shall be less than 260,000 h for Single Layer and shall be less than 230,00 h for Dual Layer.

(10) ID No. : 104026

Description of playback problem of Disc

Seamless structured Cell with HLT whose Cell size is less than 24 frames.

Phenomena of playback problems

No reaction when you have a key operation by watching a screen.

Countermeasures to be taken with disc

The minimum Cell size of seamless structured Cell with HLT shall be less than 40 frames.
