DVD Verification Laboratory - Class-A Lab SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd.

1. Introduction of Korea (SAMSUNG) Laboratory

SAMSUNG Electronics, as a Steering Committee and VTF member, wishes to expand our contribution for the DVD compatibility especially in Korean and Asian market. DVD industries were grown up rapidly in this year in Korea and will be continued in next year. Korea is one of major countries that provide DVD products for consumers as well as PC industries.

SAMSUNG has already informed VTF members of the establishment of new Verification Lab. in Korea and has worked for preparation for establishing Class-A Lab.

SAMSUNG got approval on the establishment of the Verification Lab. at the Steering Committee and ready to start verification service.

DVD Verification Laboratory does format verification activities to keep DVD products reliable in the market. Laboratory examines the samples, which has been submitted by licensee. The sample, which conforms to the DVD Specification, is recognized as DVD product, and allowed to indicate DVD Logo mark by Format Logo License Entity.

Laboratory also gives licensee advice about the product quality if necessary.

Format Verification of the following DVD products is available in SAMSUNG Laboratory from February 2000.

  • DVD-Video player
  • DVD-Audio player
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • PC DVD Player
  • DVD H/W Decoder
  • DVD S/W Decoder

SAMSUNG also has a plan to provide disc verification service from second quarter in 2000.

  • DVD-ROM discs
  • DVD-RAM discs

Some other services will be considered.

SAMSUNG also contribute verification activity by developing the verification tool. Currently SAMSUNG finishes developing the DMA verifier for the 4.7GB DVD-RAM and tool is available for the verification labs and DVD-RAM drive manufacturer. 2. The Report of Approval of Korea (LGE) Laboratory

In the Steering Committee, held on February 22th in Tokyo, LGE’s DVD Verification Laboratory was approved as "Class A-DVD Verification Laboratory". And LG Electronics Inc.(LGE)’s DVD Verification Laboratory has been operated since February 2000 with following services:

  1. DVD Video Player
  2. DVD Audio Player ( Now, we are preparing the full service )
  3. PC DVD Player and Components
Providing efficient Verification Services, LGE has set up Verification Laboratory in Digital Media Company(one of the three major companies in LGE), located in Pyungtaik City, and assigned Verification duty to full-time specialized engineers. LGE has also equipped with the following measuring devices and systems for Verification Services.

The main instruments are as follows:
  • DVD ROM Tester 2 system
  • Birefringence Tester
  • Disc Balance Checker
  • Laser Confocal Displacement Meter
  • Disc Station for DVD
  • Test Discs ( Stream, Navigation etc )

In order to offer DVD Video Disc and DVD Audio Disc Verification Services, LGE already has set up related devices and systems, and we are proceeding to the approval of DVD Steering Committee.

As a member of the Steering Committee of the DVD Forum, currently LGE is actively participating in Technical Coordination Group, the Verification Task Force, PCC, and contributing in developing Standardization, DVD format promotion and in expanding the market for DVD products.

According to starting this Class-A Laboratory Service, LGE would like to exert ourselves to keep taking part and contribute in DVD Forum.

3. Information of DVD Video Player Playback Problem

(1) ID No.111089
<Disc Configuration>
Location of the NSR Descriptor in the UDF Bridge Volume Recognition Sequence is different from LSN 19. The CD-ROM Volume Descriptor Set on these discs is bigger than 2 sectors, which is formally allowed.

<Phenomena of playback problems>
Some players hang after disc insertion or eject the disc.

<Recommended disc configuration>
The only way to avoid the problem is to make sure that the NSR Descriptor is located at LSN 19. In some cases this can be accomplished by switching off ISO-9660 file system extensions in the authoring system.

(2) ID No.111090
<Disc Configuration>
There is not any coincide bit in PTL_ID_FLD between PTL_MAIT and TT_SRPT/PGCI_SRP

<Phenomena of playback problems>
Some players unable to play. If MAX parental level(8),no approval playback.

<Recommended disc configuration>
Set coincide bit in PTL_ID_FLD at least parental level MAX(8)
(ref. DVD Annex G :Parental_ID_Field)

(3) ID No.: 111091
<disc Configuration>
The disc is configured with all of the followings:

1 Before the playback of the title, the sub-title has not be set to ON (or, intentionally set to OFF) with the disc navigation command.
2 The sub-title in the title is not ForceCaption.
3 The sub-picture stream designated with the sub-title number = 1is ForceDisp.

<phenomena of playback problems>
Regardless the user selects any sub-title just before presenting the title, the sub-title designated as the sub-picture stream Nr 1 shall always be displayed.

<recommended disc configuration>
Either of the following setting will solve the inconvenience above:

When some sub-title shall be forcedly displayed, set it to ForceCaption in

VTS_SPST_ATRT.

When the sub-picture stream number is specified with SetSTN of Navigation Command, set SP_disp_flag to ON.

4. Information of DVD Video Disc Problem

(1) ID No.111092
<description of Disc Problem>
HLI_SS 01b information appears twice in succeeding VOBUs although contents does not change at sub-picture display in menu.
HLI_SS 01b information is permitted to bring out only once in case of need.

<Phenomena of playback problems>
In some players HLI is not selectable after menu display.

(2) ID No.111093
<description of Disc Problem>
Highlight No. sprm[8] set to 0 at navigation command.
(ref. DVD-4.6.1.2 (i)SPRM(8))
HL_BTNN must be set from 1 to 36.

<Phenomena of playback problems>
Users cannot operate the menu.

5. Information of DVD Video Book Interpretation

Existent video players play some kind of video discs in different ways:

<Disc Configuration>
The disc which has highlight information in a Cell as follows:
(1) The Cell has a non-zero value for Cell Still.
(2) The highlight information in the cell includes FOAC_BTN.

<Behavior of Existent Players>
At the end of Cell Still, some players execute the FOAC_BTN command, but the others do not execute it.

TG1-1 concluded that both players are compliant.

TG1-1 requested Lab to announce the followings.

So please consider the followings if you make a disc with a Forcedly Activated Button in Cell Still Duration.

In Cell Still Duration,
(1) If you set FOAC_BTNN 1 to 36, please put same command at Cell Command.
(2) If you set FOAC_BTNN 63 which indicates to activate currently selected button, please describe the same function in Post Command sequence using SPRM(8) which maintains Highlighted Button number.
