It is gratifying to start DVD business with products release in
the US market close at hand followed by the last fall release
in the Japanese market.
Building platforms that accommodate abundant software and versatile
application environments is essential to DVD business start-up.
In view of the above, we are pleased to inform you that we have
decided to release DVD Verification News for rapid and efficient
DVD Format Verification. In doing so, we will inform All NDA Contractors
of DVD Specifications for Read-Only Disc about our information
obtained through DVD Format Verification in in the Japanese market.
We would be obliged if you, each of NDA Contractors of DVD Specifications
for Read -Only Disc would make the most use of DVD Format Verification
News for ensuring quality of DVD products in the Japanese market.
For the time being, Toshiba Corporation will be in charge of releasing
DVD Format Verification News.
As for each DVD Format Verification service, kindly contact each
Laboratory listed above.

DVD Format Verification laboratory will commence PAL Format Verification
Service in addition to the conventional NTSC Format Verification
Service.
Newly
released verification tools, whose fees are charged, are described
below in addition to the conventional ones whose fees are also
charged.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. has commenced sample
distribution of DVD-NF150 (Navigation Files Test Disc Vol.2) as
Playability Verification Tool for "Dual Layer Opposite Path Test
Disc".
For
inquiries of the Verification Tools described above, please contact
each Laboratory. Misinterpretations of DVD Specifications appear
in actual design since Logical Format of DVD Video Specifications
has advanced functions.
It
is pointed out that some points in the Specifications do not have
the specified description. Supplemental information that should
be considered on the design of DVD products is described in this
practical report.
We
hope that will be of great help to design engineers.
1.
Mis-bit-allocation of DVD Video Disc
DVD
Video Verifier can be employed as a tool for Logical Format Verification
of Disc.
The following are typical errors.
(1)
V6002 Buffer management is wrong
Playback failure in MPEG Decoder model (P-STD). Something is wrong
with Buffer control Algorism in Encoder.
See p. VI3-89 and ISO / IEC 03818-2.
(2)
V6005 Transfer rate is greater than MAX _ Vo.
Error that Transfer rate is greater than 10.08 Mbps.
Time interval of SCR (top of Pack) is required.
Countermeasures might be taken by decreasing Transfer rate if
Transfer rate can be set in Encoder.
See p. V15-1 and ISO/ IEC 1381-1.
(3)
V 2001 Relation of PTS and DTS is wrong.
Relation of PTC and DTS is wrong. Assuming that something is wrong
with Encoder processing for PTS and DTS.
See ISO / IEC 1381-1.
(4)
V 1259 PTS exists in A _ PKT which has no first data of audio
frame.
PTS exists in A _ PKT which has no first data of audio frame.
Assuming that there are some errors for Encoder processing for
PTS and DTS.
See ISO /IEC 13818-1
Mis-bit-allocation dose not always cause DVD player playback problems.
However, we can forecast that problems might occur when DVD Players
are introduced to the market one after another in future time.
Therefore, we strongly advise you that you conduct verification
using " DVD Video Verifier " on the production of discs.
2. Some notes on commercially available DVD Player playback
troubles
that affect on discs.
Hung-up might occur when you play a player which is commercially
available with the discs described below.
Please note that the following requirements can be met on the
production of discs since it has not been specified in the Specifications.
Notes on the disc that PGC dose not exist in Title menu.
Let Title menu, and Entry PGC exist in case that VMGM _ DOM exists,
or let Dummy PGC exist in case that VGMG _ DOM exists.
3. Supplemental description on SPRAM (20) : Player Region Code
(P_ RCD)
In response to the indefinite definition for Region Code of SPRAM
(20), the following information is supplied after we have made
inquiries of DVD Format Development Group.
For the NDA Contractors of DVD Specifications for Read -Only Disc,
those information is to be provided separately as appendix of
DVD Book.
One single Region code which complies with region is set for Player.
As for SPRM (20), one value among those described below is supposed
to be set in compliance with the Region of a player.
Region Code of Region #1= 00000001b
Region Code of Region #2= 00000010b
Region Code of Region #3= 00000100b
Region Code of Region #4= 00001000b
Region Code of Region #5= 00010000b
Region Code of Region #6= 00100000b
4.
Distribution of SUPPLEMENTAL TEST DISC VERIFICATION MANUAL
We will distribute DVD Format Verification manual which verifies
on Navigation function of DVD Video Player using commercially
available discs.
Verification using this manual is to complete verification with
Reference Test Disc.
In some cases, you are required to use different operation for
verification, since the instructions described in a manual is
on the premise that you will use DVD Supplemental Test Player
(FM-001U).
We will be very happy if it would be of some help to the development
of DVD Player.
5. Release of DVD Video Verifier Version 0.9.2
DVD Video Verifier is upgraded to Version 0.9.2.
We have already informed the DVD Video Verifier Contractors of
the upgraded version.
